Each year, the number of people moving towards urbanization increases and so does the quantity of houses and factories to sponge that movement in. What seems rational is thinking big with ‘solar power,’ as it seems like the ultimate solution to the rapidly growing need of electricity.
What is Solar Power?
Understanding solar power begins with the concept of capturing the energy of the sun and converting it into electricity. Speaking scientifically, the sun is a nuclear reactor with tiny sources of energy that it releases namely ‘photons.’ Photons travel 93 million miles from the sun to Earth within 8.5 minutes. Each hour, a sufficient amount of photons impacts the planet to generate enough amount of solar energy. In an ideal world, if this energy was rightly preserved and utilized, it would have been enough to satisfy the global electricity needs for a complete year. In the current day, only a small fraction of this power is being used, and mostly by influential nations like the USA.
How Does it Work?
Solar power works through solar panels which are made up of semiconductors, with cells made of silicon. The panels have positive layers and negative layers which together makes an electric field similar to batteries. If this technology was used in a mainstream way, one could buy an apartment in Dhaka and even in poorly developed areas where conventional electricity is rarely available.
Why Solar Power?
One of the biggest reasons why solar power is the ultimate innovation of mankind is that this source of energy is renewable. Also, the sun is everywhere. It reduces electricity bills and is low maintenance given that the biggest part of maintaining it is keeping the system clean. Constant upgrading of technology also makes this power more reliable and trusted.
Germany is one of the top countries to be using solar power. In the year 2009, they installed as much as 8 times more megawatts of photovoltaic solar energy capacity more than America did that year.
Spain is progressive in terms of solar power and was once the world’s leader for it. About 10 percent of Spain’s energy power comes from solar power today. This statistic is 5 times bigger than the average of 2 percent in the rest of the world.
Italy has more solar panels installed than California while Japan invested $9 million in 2009 to promote the usage.
The USA is trying it’s best to cut down the electricity cost by using solar power and the initiative is concentrated mostly in California.
Solar Possibilities in Bangladesh
If the government of the country invests in the technological advancement of solar power for the mass, it is possible that house for sell in Dhaka and all other areas may rise for both residential use and commercial use aiding the real estate sector. Solar energy is versatile in itself. Electricity being able to be generated from it can readily solve the countries miseries around electricity limitations. Generation of heat from it in the form of solar thermal can work well during the winter, especially in public places. There is a crisis of clean water in many areas and this problem may be solved through energy grid. Along with powering satellite in space, solar power may be used to integrate materials to be used in buildings.
Rapid urbanization, encouraged by stable economic growth, has created a massive energy demand in Bangladesh. It is well known that energy plays an important role in poverty correction, economic growth, sustainable infrastructure development, and ensuring the security of a country.
In Bangladesh, electricity is the most widely used mean of energy. Future economic growth significantly depends on the access to electricity. At present, about 72% of the total population has access to electricity, and electricity supply is not adequately reliable.
Bangladesh is starving for energy for last few decades since its power generation is mainly depended on imported fossil fuel and natural gas. The present government has successfully increased electricity generation, yet grid electricity is not reachable in the remote areas of the country due to lack of infrastructure and longstanding distribution facilities.
Solar power is five to eleven times more expensive than regular electricity to produce. The process is costly also in comparison to generate electricity from coal, hydro or nuclear sources. The technology is costly in it is a barrier that limits solar energy being accessible to most countries. Also, the semiconductors needed to generate electricity from sunlight add to the price.
However, it may be concluded that Bangladesh has huge potential, but it must overcome many challenges, especially the one of global warming and the energy crisis, not to mention poverty reduction, to realize its full potential. We can dream of a future where renewable energy technology is the major contributor to our energy mix.
As a climate-vulnerable country, and for sustainable energy development and energy security, a Bangladesh solar mission needs to be designed to achieve SDGs by 2030 and to build the foundation to reach 100% renewable energy in the future.
Proper planning and implementation of a sustainable technological, financial, and socially accepted business models articulated through Bangladesh’s solar mission, along with strong government policies, proper investment policies, affordable technologies, quality products and strong research and development will gradually transform the nation into a 100% renewable resource; even if we can dream of Bangladesh becoming the first solar nation by 2041.
