Compared to the western side of the world, public transport in Bangladesh is way cheaper, but the vehicles are less than ideal, plus there are many ways one could manage to be ripped off. Chances are, at one point or another, we could all use a little bit of wisdom, so without further ado, here’s the list:
Easy Come, Easy Go? No.
Anyone who has lived in Bangladesh knows this – you have to time it right. The buses will stop for a very short moment and in that small gap, you have to make your decision – whether you want in or out. There’s no room for second thought here. You snooze, you lose. Best case – you’ll miss a bus. Worst case – they’ll drop you off miles away from your destination.
The Conductor Is Not Your Friend
That guy who’s screaming at the top of his lungs and slapping the bus every now and then, doesn’t get paid to help you. Not really. He’s trying to make a semblance of sense out of the overstuffed crowd inside, and collect the payment. Whatever you need, you have to manage by yourself.
Know the Prices Beforehand
Just ask someone, anyone. Ask the guy next to you if you have to. Just don’t ask the conductor, he’ll most likely add something to his own pocket. Sure, in the grand scheme of things, that’s not a large number, but it is a significant portion off your next bus ride.
Nice Guys (and Ladies) Finish Last
When it comes to the bus, no one cares about being nice, and neither should you. Push through the crowd, get the seat if you can, elbow someone if you must. The cold stare is your best friend.
Don’t Talk To Strangers
It all begins with conversation, then they offer you food, and we all know what happens next. Just in case you don’t – anything could happen, ranging from lost belongings to being kidnapped and ransomed.
Don’t Fall Asleep
This goes hand in hand with the previous one. If you’re lucky, you’ll merely miss your stop and wake up at the next one (or the one after that)
